Arkansas Medicare Part D Plans

Overview of criteria to help choose an Arkansas Medicare Part D Plan for 2014Arkansas Medicare Part D

Part D Plans have a lot of variables to consider.. You should not choose a plan based on monthly premium alone. Arkansas Part D Plans for 2014 are no exception. Part D premiums can vary widely but so can the list of drugs covered by each plan. Other considerations include, plan deductible, whether there is coverage in the gap and the assigned Medicare plan rating.

It’s important to weigh plan options and choose wisely because the ability to change plans mid-year is limited. The most important aspect of a Medicare drug plan is the plan formulary or list of covered medications. But a Part D Plan also has to be affordable.

There are 29 stand-alone plans available in Arkansas for 2014 with monthly premiums starting as low as $12.60 for the Humana Walmart-Preferred Rx plan. You may also be able to secure Medicare drug coverage through a Medicare advantage plan. There are often Medicare Advantage plans available with monthly premiums starting at $0.

Review the list of Part D Plans available in Arkansas to create a short list. After narrowing your list, research plan formularies, pharmacy networks and mail order programs to choose the best Part D Plan for your circumstances.

Basic vs enhanced Part D formularies

One of the biggest determinants of monthly premium is the plan’s formulary. The deductible as well as copays and coinsurance amounts also affect the monthly premium. A basic formulary is just that, basic. This will give you fewer drugs but at the same time they are the most popular. An enhanced formulary will include all drugs the company considers basic as well as some of the more expensive and often times less prescribed drugs.

Which formulary do you need? That is entirely dependent on what drugs you are required to take. If the only way you can get your drugs is to enroll in a plan with an enhanced formulary, you should do so. But on the other hand if all your drugs are covered on a plan with a basic formulary, you may want to enroll in that plan and keep some money in your pocket.

When researching 2014 Arkansas Medicare Part D Plans, take the time to visit plan websites for any plan that you are interested in and explore the formulary. Not only will you determine if your drugs are covered but which tiers your drugs are listed in as well. The drug tier will determine how much you will pay for copays and coinsurance. Follow these simple steps and you should have no problem finding the right Arkansas Part D Plan for 2014.
