The Part D formulary makes the plan

The above list is a great way to compare plan features side-by-side, but don’t make the mistake of choosing the plan with the lowest premium and assume that you got the best deal. There is a lot more that goes into the total cost than the monthly premium. Here are some other features you should review:

  • The formulary – make sure all your drugs are covered
  • Drug tier placement – don’t assume that a drug will be placed in the same tier by different plans
  • Copayment and coinsurance amounts – consider plans with low copays verses coinsurance amounts where you are unsure of drug cost
  • Pharmacy network – some plans give discounts at preferred pharmacies
  • Mail order benefits – some plan offer $0 copay on tier 1 drugs
  • Any ancillary benefits – some plans include additional discounts on health related products and services

There are many things to consider when choosing a Part D Plan. With 33 Plans available in Illinois you should be able to narrow your list and choose one that is suitable for your needs and budget.

  1. How can I find out which plan I am on. I thought it was the Humana-Walmart with a premium of $22.80 per month.

  2. Judy, If you are enrolled in a plan you should have received a card in the mail. If you did not, you could contact your agent (if you have one) or visit your pharmacy and give them your Social Security number to look up your coverage.
