Formularies for Part D plans in Massachusetts vary greatly

A quick review of the above list will reveal that Part D Plans have some major differences. The formularies (list of covered drugs) also bear this out and is the one area that will have the biggest impact on whether you have a positive or negative experience with your chosen plan.

It should go without saying that you must choose a plan that includes all of your required medications, but each year countless people choose a plan based on monthly premium or a recommendation from a friend or family member who doesn’t completely understand that plan choice is best determined by individual circumstances.

In addition, don’t merely choose a plan that includes all your drugs, but rather, take it a step further and compare plans based on which tiers they place individual drugs into. A drug may be listed in tier 2 by Company A and tier 3 by Company B. Tier placement will have a direct bearing on how much you will pay when you have a prescription filled.

Other considerations when choosing a plan include; the pharmacy network, mail order benefits and any ancillary benefits or discounts on heath related products or services. With 28 Part D Plans available in Massachusetts for 2014 you should be able to find a plan that meets your needs and budget if you do your homework.
