With little opportunity to change Medicare Part D plans mid-year it pays to explore all your Medicare prescription drug options.

There are two Medco Part D plans for 2013 that are worth a look. You likely have a couple dozen plans to choose from with some plans having greater name recognition that Medco. Medco’s part D program is branded as Express Scripts Medicare.

But name recognition is not the best reason to choose a Part D plan. Part D is highly regulated and many aspects of a plan will be the same across the board.

This article will give you an overview of both the Medco Medicare Prescription Plan – Value (PDP) and the Medco Medicare Prescription Plan – Choice (PDP).

Medco Medicare Prescription plan highlights

Medco Medicare Prescription Plan – Value (PDP)*

  • $325 deductible
  • Tier 1 Preferred Generics – $4 for a 31 day supply / $10 for a  90 day supply
  • Tier 2  Non-Preferred Generics – $ 6 for a 31 day supply / $20 for a 90 day supply
  • Tier 3 Preferred Brand – 25% coinsurance for both a 31 and 90 day supply
  • Tier 4 Non-Preferred Brand – 27 – 50% coinsurance for both a 31 and 90 supply (some State variations)
  • Tier 5 Specialty – 25% coinsurance for both a 31 and 90 day supply

* Not all drugs will be available at the extended day supply. As with most carriers if the cost is less than the cost sharing amount you will pay the lower amount. Premiums are as low as $34.50.

Medco Medicare Prescription Plan – Choice (PDP)*

  • $200 deductible on all drugs except generics
  • Tier 1 Preferred Generics – $6 for a 31 day supply / $15 for a 31 day supply
  • Tier 3 Preferred Brand – $45 for a 31 day supply / $135 for a 91 day supply
  • Tier 4 Non-Preferred Brand – $95 for a 31 day supply / $285 for a 90 day supply
  • Tier 5 Specialty – 28% coinsurance for both a 31 and 90 day supply

* Not all drugs will be available at the extended day supply. As with most carriers if the cost is less than the cost sharing amount you will pay the lower amount. Premiums are as low as $67.90.

The Medco Part D Value plan is offered nationally while the Medco Part D Choice plan is not offered in all States.

As with all Part D plans, people with higher incomes will pay more in premium and extra help for those that qualify due to a low income will be available. The above outline is just that.

When comparing the Medco Part D plans to other plan options the formulary is an indispensable tool to determine if a plan is a good fit. Not only will you learn if your medications are included but also the tier placement of individual drugs.
