Michigan Medicare Part D Plans

Compare Michigan Medicare Part D Plans for 2014Michigan Medicare Part D

Because the window of opportunity to change Part D Plans is so limited, you must compare plans while having the most available knowledge about your options.

There are 31 Medicare Part D Plans available in Michigan for 2014. Both benefits and premiums vary widely. What’s not readily apparent is that there is also a disparity among plans related to which drugs are covered and which are not.

Any comparison of Part D Plans should include a look at the plan’s comprehensive formulary. Being certain that your drugs are covered is paramount to find a plan suited to your needs.

The formulary will also indicate the tier placement of each medication. A specific drug’s tier placement is not universal between plans. One plan may list a drug as tier 2 and another plan list the same drug as tier 3. This can have an impact on your annual costs.

The following list is a summary overview of plan features and benefits. The most important aspect of any Part D plan is the plan’s formulary or list of covered medications.

When and How to enroll in Part D

If you are new to Medicare you should enroll in a Part D Plan even if you are currently not taking medications. If you miss your enrollment period, you may be subject to a late enrollment penalty should you enroll in a plan at a later date. Another reason to enroll…. it’s called insurance for a reason!

To enroll in Part D you can submit an application from 3 months prior to the 1st of the month you turn 65, the month you turn 65 and 3 months after the month you turn 65. The enrollment period lasts 7 months in all.

You can also change add, drop or switch plans on an annual basis. Submit an application during the Annual Open Enrollment period which begins October 15th and ends December 7th. Your new plan will become effective on January 1st.

If you’re happy with your plan and it is renewing for the following year, you do not need to submit a new application.  Your plan will automatically be renewed.

With 31 Part D plans available in Michigan you have more options than some people living in other States. Do your homework and you should have no problem finding a suitable plan.
