What to focus on when visiting a plan’s website

As mentioned earlier in the article, the most important aspect of a Medicare drug plan is whether or not all your medications are covered. The lowest monthly premium, the lowest deductible or highest Star rating will mean little if your drugs are not covered.

When you visit the plan’s website, you are looking for a link to the complete Part D formulary for the plan you are considering. Be sure to choose the correct link! The formulary for a basic plan and the formulary for an enhanced plan (even from the same company) will be radically different.

Basic Formulary

A basic formulary will include the most popular medications prescribed to people on Medicare. The list will be heavy on generics and not so heavy on more expensive or less common drugs.

Enhanced Formulary

An enhanced formulary will include all the drugs on the basic formulary and then some. This type of formulary is often best for people with chronic conditions or those who require less common medications. The enhanced formulary will typically have a low or $0 deductible to off-set the higher premium.

You should also be aware that just because a drug is listed as a tier 2 for example, it may fall into different tier (maybe tier 3) with a another company’s plan. I pays to do your homework!

If you take your time and do a thorough comparison you should be able to find a suitable plan among the available in Nevada.
