The Part D formulary is more than a list of drugs

The plan’s formulary is by far the most important piece of information that you should review prior to enrolling in a Medicare drug plan. It’s true that the formulary will give you a complete list of all covered medications, but there’s more to the story.

The formulary also gives you information about drug tiers. The lower the tier, the lower your copay or coinsurance amount (generally). But a drug’s tier placement can vary from company to company. It’s not uncommon to find a drug listed as a tier 2 by one company and also listed as a tier 3 or 4 by other companies.

Paying strict attention to drug tiers can allow you to enroll in a plan with a much lower annual out-of-pocket cost, even if you are required to take just a few medications.

Aside from the features detailed above, there are other important considerations when choosing one of the Part D Plans available in New Hampshire as well. Such as:

  • The amount of copay or coinsurance required by each plan
  • The pharmacy network
  • Extra discounts for preferred pharmacies
  • Mail order benefits
  • Any ancillary benefits included by the plan

Choose you plan carefully, as the opportunity to make changes outside of the annual enrollment period (October 15 – December 7) is limited. Review your plan each year and recognize that you may need to switch each year due to plans changing their benefits.
