The Part D formulary is key to choosing the right plan

Don’t make the mistake of choosing a Medicare drug plan based solely on the monthly premium or the recommendation of a friend or family member. The plan with the lowest monthly premium is not always the least costly and what may be right for someone else may not be for you.

After you have narrowed your list of possible plans, you should visit the plan website and review the formulary for each plan. The formulary is the list of drugs that are covered by a particular plan. Plan formularies vary widely.

A basic formulary will include the most common medications taken by people on Medicare, whereas a enhanced formulary will include less common drugs and those that are most commonly prescribed for chronic conditions.

You are looking for two things when you review a formulary: that your drugs are all covered and in which tiers your individual drugs are placed. When comparing Part D Plans available in New Mexico it’s important to note that a specific drug may be listed in different tiers by different plans, which ultimately will effect your out-of-pocket costs.

Other important factors you should note when visiting a plan’s website include; the pharmacy network, mail order options and any ancillary benefits that may be included beyond prescription coverage.
