Finding the best Part D Plan in New York

If finding the best Part D Plan meant merely choosing the plan with the highest Medicare Star rating, you would choose Simply Prescriptions. But what if both plans offered by Simply Prescriptions is out of your price range or what if neither plan includes all of your medications?

These questions shed light on why additional research beyond a government rating is required. Of course a plan should be affordable, but total cost over the course of a year involves more than the monthly premium. You must factor in the deductible, copay or coinsurance amounts and whether or not all your medications are covered.

In fact, the most important aspect of any Part D Plan is the formulary. The formulary is the list of drugs which are covered by a particular plan. The formulary will also detail which tiers individual drugs are place into. Tier placement has a direct bearing on your total plan cost. If you only take away one thing from this article, it’s that if your drugs are not covered by a specific particular plan… it’s not the best plan for you. Only enroll in a plan that covers your drugs.

Once you have narrowed your list of plans down to a manageable few, you should visit each plan’s website to review the formulary. Additional information found at each plan’s website will include, pharmacy networks, whether or not there are any preferred pharmacies, coinsurance and copayment amount, mail order benefits and whether or not a plan will include any ancillary benefits.

With 26 stand-alone Part D Plans available in New York for 2014, with a little research, you should be able to find your best plan choice.

  1. Why does this have to be so complicated? Doesn’t anyone realize that the very people who need Medicare (mostly the elderly)are the least equipped to deal with sorting through all the information, trying to find links that don’t work and generally having their benefits changed every year and having to research the confusing products again & again? So when we get too old/sick/disabled/senile to do it, what happens?

  2. Georgette, The short answer is it’s a government run program! But seriously, it’s like anything else. You can rely on getting help informally from friends or family or you can consult a professional insurance agent. They get paid the same amount no matter which plan you choose. Check with a broker who represents several companies. You can also consult with your local Area Council on Aging office. It’s a free service and they will go out of their way to help you.
