North Carolina Medicare Part D Plans

Complete list of North Carolina Medicare Part D Plans for 2014North Carolina Part D

If you are new to Medicare or haven’t shopped for a Medicare drug plan lately, you may be surprised to learn that there are 29 Part D Plans available in North Carolina for 2014.

These plans are stand-alone plans and do not take into consideration the Medicare drug benefits associated with the dozens of Medicare Advantage Plans that are offered County-by-County in North Carolina.

It’s an unfortunate fact that many people choose a plan based solely on monthly premium or on the recommendation of a friend or family member.

The plan with the lowest monthly premium may not necessarily have the lowest annual cost when you factor in all the variables. And since plans are all unique and your individual circumstances may not mirror those of the person offering a recommendation, following that recommendation may not be in your interests.

The following list of Part D Plans will allow you to compare; monthly premiums, annual deductibles, type of plan (basic or enhanced), whether or not there is extra coverage in the gap (donut hole) and Medicare Star ratings.

Finding the best Part D Plan in North Carolina

First, you should know that there is not a one size fits all plan that is best for everyone. If this were the case you wouldn’t have a choice of 29 plans.

By far, the most important consideration when you choose a Part D Plan is that all your medications are included in the plan’s formulary. The formulary is the list of drugs covered by each plan.

Basic Formulary

A basic formulary will include the most popular medications taken by Medicare beneficiaries. As you can see from the table above, basic plans will generally have lower monthly premiums but will usually require a deductible and offer very little extra coverage in the gap.

Enhanced Formulary

An enhanced formulary will include all the drugs listed in a providers basic formulary as well as more of the less common (read higher cost) drugs as well as many medications designed to treat chronic conditions.

After you have narrowed your list of plans to criteria which you find to be important, i.e. premium, deductible, gap coverage, etc. , you should visit plan websites to review the formulary. The formulary will also indicate which tier specific drugs are listed in. This will have have an impact on your out-of-pocket costs as you use your plan. Drugs may be placed in different tiers by different companies.

Visiting plan websites will also allow you to review the pharmacy network, whether or not there are preferred pharmacies that will allow you to save even more money and mail order options. After you review this information, you should be able to rest assured that you have chosen the best Part D Plan available in North Carolina for your specific circumstances.
