Why the Part D formulary matters

Aside from finding a plan with a premium you can afford, the plan’s formulary is the most important thing you should take into consideration prior to enrollment. A Part D formulary is the list of medications that are included and covered by the plan.

There are basic formularies and enhanced formularies. The basic formularies will include the most common medications taken by people on Medicare and the enhanced will include basic, as well as less common (read more expensive) medications. You should choose a plan that includes all your drugs. But don’t over-compensate and pay too much!

The formulary will also indicate which tier a specific drug is placed in. the higher the tier… the more money for a copay or coinsurance amount. Not all plans place the same drugs in the same tier. You need to compare and shop to get the lowest cost plan for your specific circumstances.

Other things to take into consideration include:

  • Pharmacy network
  • Whether or not there are preferred pharmacies within that network
  • Copay and coinsurance amounts
  • Mail order benefits
  • Whether there are any ancillary benefits such as discounts on health and wellness products

If you take everything into consideration and find a plan that includes your required medications, you should be able to find the best Part D Plan available in North Dakota for your specific circumstances.
