Finding your best Part D option

Everyone’s criteria is different. You may not want a plan with a deductible, you may want to choose a plan with a high Medicare Star rating or maybe having gap coverage is important to you. The above list will help you narrow your choices.

When it’s time to compare plans it becomes imperative that you visit plan websites or review a hard copy of all plan details. There are two documents that you must become familiar with.

Summary of Benefits

The Summary of Benefits will include such information as premiums, deductibles, coinsurance or copayment information as well as pertinent information relating to preferred pharmacy use and any ancillary benefits that may be included with the plan.

Part D Formulary

The formulary is specific to the plan you are reviewing. Not all plans include the same medications and the tier that a drug is placed in may be different from plan to plan. The most important aspect of any plan is the formulary. If your drugs are not covered you will be paying for them yourself. And that will eliminate any advantage you may have gained by choosing a plan with a low premium or $0 deductible.

Since tier placement of drugs can vary plan to plan, you need to review each drug, it’s tier placement and how much it will cost to fill that prescription. The formulary will also include the drugs (if any) that are covered  in the gap or donut hole.

The other factors that you should consider are the pharmacy network and the mail order benefits. Most national plans will include roughly 60,000 pharmacies with the possibility of some plans offering preferred pharmacies that will result in you paying less to fill a prescription.

If you follow these steps, you should have no problem choosing one of the Part D Plans available in Ohio for 2014 and feel assured that you made the best choice.

  1. just wondering what medicines are covered.if there is a book that says what is not PLEASE send it to me.thank you very much….PLEASE…….. PLEASE Help me……

  2. Gail, Plans have different formularies. You should use the drug look-up tool on a plan’s website or visit medicare.gov and search for plans. You will be able to enter all your drugs and filter the plans that include what medications you take.
