Some factors may effect your satisfaction with a plan besides money. For instance, if you are enrolled in a plan with a limited pharmacy network or poor customer service, you have probably chosen the wrong plan.

Some factors to consider are detailed in the table below. Monthly premium, annual deductible amount, type of plan (basic or enhanced), whether or not there is coverage in the gap and Medicare Star rating should all be considered when choosing a plan.

Beyond that criteria, you should also explore the plan formulary…. more about that below.

Why the Part D formulary matters

The formulary is the most important aspect of any Part D Plan. The formulary will list all medications covered as well as which tier those medications are placed in.

Formularies will vary from plan to plan and tier classification for drugs can vary as well. It’s not uncommon to find a drug listed in tier 2 by one plan and tier 3 by another.

The easiest way to find and review a formulary is online at the plan’s website. If you are having difficulty finding the formulary, you should request a hard copy be mailed to you. Do not enroll in a plan without reviewing the formulary to be certain that all your drugs are included.

In addition to the formulary and the criteria detailed above, you should also consider:

  • The copay or coinsurance amount for each tier
  • The pharmacy network
  • Whether or not there are discounts to use preferred pharmacies
  • The mail order benefits
  • If there are any ancillary benefits such as discounts on health and wellness products and services

If you use the table above to narrow your list of possibilities, it will be much easier to find the right plan among the 31 available in Oklahoma.
