Steps to finding the best Part D Plan

Finding the right Part D Plan is not difficult if you have a methodology to sort and compare plans. The table above is your starting point. Determine which criteria are important to you and develop a short list. For instance, if you want a plan with a Medicare Star rating higher than 3 and some coverage while in the gap, eliminate plans that do not meet that criteria.

Once you have narrowed your list, take these steps:

  1. Visit the plans website to review the formulary to be certain your drugs are covered.
  2. Compare tier placement of your drugs between plans, as they can vary.
  3. Review the network of pharmacies.
  4. If using preferred pharmacies will result in a discount, make sure they are near to you.
  5. Compare the mail order benefits of plan that may interest you.
  6. Determine if there are any ancillary benefits that will add value to one plan over an other.

By far the most important aspect of any plan is that the drugs are covered. If your drugs are not covered you will more than likely be paying for them yourself. Only after you have found plans that meet your needs should you pay much attention to the monthly premium. Factoring all costs requires more than just comparing monthly premiums.

If you follow these steps you should have no problem finding a suitable Part D plan available in Oregon.
