Why the formulary matters the most

Some people think that the monthly premium is the most important aspect of a Part D Plan. Others believe that having coverage in the gap is indispensable or that the Medicare Star rating will point you to the best plan.

In reality, all of these are important, but nothing matters more than the plan’s formulary. The formulary is the list of medicines that are covered by the plan.

The formulary also gives you some other important data that will allow you to calculate what your potential annual cost will be. Annual cost equals; monthly premium plus deductible and you share of copayment or coinsuance required when you fill a prescription.

In order to determine how much copay or coinsurance is required, you must know what tier each of your medicines fall into. This is found in the formulary.

When comparing plans, you should also be aware that the same medicine may be listed in different formularys.

There are may things to consider when choosing a Medicare Part D Plan in Tennessee and the most important; that all your medications are covered, can be learned from reviewing the plan’s formulary.
