Texas Medicare Part D Plans

Unlike Medicare Advantage – All Texas Medicare Part D Plans are available StatewideTexas Map For Part D Plans

When it comes to choosing one of the 31 Medicare Part D Plans available in Texas for 2014, there’s a lot less hassle than trying to find and compare Medicare Advantage Plans.

Part D Plans include the same benefits from County to County and are available Statewide. This is in contrast to Medicare Advantage Plans.  With Advantage Plans, some Counties will have dozens of options available, while other may have only a couple.

Also with Medicare Advantage Plans, the benefits included in the same plan can vary by County. For example, AARP MedicareComplete may be available in Counties across Texas, but the plan may not be the same from County to County.

You can receive your Part D benefits in one of two ways; you can enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan with Part D included or you can enroll in a stand-alone Part D Plan.

If you enroll in an Advantage Plan, you will by default have to accept the Part D available within that plan. So when comparing Advantage plans, researching Part D becomes just as important as researching the medical benefits within each plan.

If you are going to receive your medical benefits from original Medicare or Medicare and a Medigap policy, your option will be to enroll in a stand-alone Part D Plan.

Benefits within plans and premiums vary widely. The following list includes all Part D Plans available in Texas for 2014.

Choosing the best Part D Plan

Given the fact that you are locked-in annually to the plan you choose, it only makes sense to research your options thoroughly before you commit.

Everyone wants to join the best plan, but the best plan is elusive. Because everyone has different needs and budgets, there is not a universal solution as to which plan is best.

Follow these steps when choosing a plan:

  • Review the above list and determine which plan features are important to you. For instance, do you need to stay within a certain monthly premium? Do you require coverage in the gap? Do you want a $0 deductible? What about Medicare Star rating, is it important?
  • Narrow your list of potential plans based on the criteria which is most important to you.
  • Visit plan websites for each plan on your short list and locate the plan formulary. The formulary will list all medications covered by the plan. Make sure your prescriptions are covered. Also note which tier each drug is listed in.
  • Determine how much each prescription will cost you based on tier placement. Also note if there are discounts for using preferred pharmacies or receiving your medications through the mail. Be sure to factor any deductible into your annual cost as well.
  • Determine if there are any ancillary benefits that will add value to your plan, such as discounts on vitamins or other health and wellness products and services.

After reviewing all pertinent data for each plan, you should have a pretty good idea as to which plan is the most suitable with the lowest monthly premium. You have found your best plan. Even if you live in the most remote rural County, you should be able to find a winner among the Part D Plans available in Texas.

  1. Phone numbers would have een helpful. But the star ratings are extremely helpful.
