Part D benefits also included in Medicare Advantage Plans

Aside from the Medicare Part D Plans listed above, you also have the option of enrolling in a Medicare Advantage Plan with Part D benefits included.

An Advantage Plan is not considered a Medicare supplement and whereas a supplement cannot include Part D benefits, an Advantage Plan can.

Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies and are another way to receive your Medicare benefits. Unlike stand-alone Part D Plans, Advantage Plans are not necessarily available Statewide, but rather, are available County-to-County.

It’s possible that the same plan, offered in different Counties, could have different benefits and a different premium. When you enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan which includes Part D (not all of them do), you must accept the drug benefits as is.

Whereas you can compare stand-alone plans to each other, you must compare the entire Advantage Plan package to other Advantage Plans. This complicates things a little. For instance, a plan with great drug benefits may be less than desirable for its medical benefits or provider network.

When enrolling in an Advantage Plan there are many more considerations to factor in than when joining a stand-alone Part D Plan. Be sure to research Part D formularies not matter which type of plan you choose to join.
